The realism of special-effects violence, together with audience knowledge that the violence is simulated, operate in tandem to produce a suspension of disbelief. “I know it’s not real, but it looks real.” The work of special effects, as Boss notes, is to produce a realistic though imperfect “illusion of people in torment” so the artifice can be appreciated and the torment enjoyed (1986, 24). Awareness of artifice then, is not a flaw but an essential ingredient of recreational terror. The combination of realism and artifice in special-effects violence allows the bored viewer who needs to spike the experience to focus on the realism (“pretend it’s real”) while simlutaneously allowing the overstimulated viewer verging on terror to focus on the artifice without abandoning a sense of realism (“pretend it’s fake”). As recreational terror depends on the tension between seeing and not-seeing, so it depends on the tension between special-effects realism and awareness of its artifice. —

i think this is hella timely in association with the response to what happened to ronald poppo, the homeless man in florida who had his face chewed off. people are treating it as if it’s out of a horror film—joking about zombies, passing the very graphic pictures around, etc. but it IS real and it is legitimately terrifying. i guess collectively we’re attempting to pretend it’s fake, but it isn’t really our place to try to denigrate and reduce his trauma into something so inconsequential.
The July issue of British Vogue features Miranda Kerr and Flynn Bloom looking very cute on a hillside. It’s all quite lovely, but as a feminist, I am appalled by this double standard. I ask you, could a woman appear in Vogue with arms and a back as pudgy as this?
Men have it so easy.

Investigators say 21-year-old college student Alexander Kinyua killed his roommate and then ate his heart and parts of his brain. He cut off his victim’s head and hands and stored them in his family’s townhouse on Terrapin Terrace in Joppatowne. —

Seriously? I’m kind of side-eyeing a lot of people right now ‘cause I keep seeing people saying “sorry” before they call out someones racism. Also, I keep seeing folks go on to say, “I’m not calling you a racist, but…” — no. Stop right there. That is the same as people saying “I’m not racist, but…”. If you are calling out someones racism, guess what? 99.9% sure that person is a racist; sometimes often just an individual that needs to undo their learned behavior, if they’re willing to, but that doesn’t erase anything. White people constantly behave as though being called a racist is far more hurtful than their racist actions — do not encourage this by coddling their feelings.
We need to stop ignoring the guilt behind calling out white people on their ‘ish. We should all know by now racists aren’t just the guys in Klan uniforms with swastika’s on their chest and shaved heads under their hoods. We should all know my now it isn’t just being called racial epithets that unveil a racist. We should know by now that racism is often subtle, covert, and done in such a way that others won’t suspect or believe your accusations. Do not apologize for speaking up. Do not try to assuage the racist when it is you who are attacked. If you are an apologist, you are not on my side or any other PoC’s side, and thus just as much in need of a learning lesson as they.
It boggles my mind how much care and attention is given to white feelings in instances like these (and y’know, pretty much all the time)…truly astounding.
